The Research Score rates each product on its own merits. Our picks also weigh price and who the product is for, so a pick can rank above a higher-scoring product. How we score

Claude and Gemini cost almost exactly the same at the time of research: Claude Pro is $20 a month (or $17 a month billed annually), and Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month in the US. Both have free tiers, and both companies’ top models sit at or near the top of public leaderboards. So the real question is what you want the assistant to do.

Our short answer: Gemini is the better deal for most people. Google’s plans bundle image and video generation, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, a cheaper $4.99 tier and, on AI Pro, 5 TB of cloud storage. Claude is the better pick if your work is mostly writing or code: Anthropic’s top model ranked first on LMArena’s creative-writing and web-development leaderboards at the time of research, and Claude advertises a context window of up to 1 million tokens on every plan, including Free.

We compared the two using Anthropic’s and Google’s own pricing, help and privacy pages and LMArena’s public rankings. We did not test either assistant hands-on.

Why you should trust us

We compared Claude and Gemini using Anthropic’s and Google’s official pricing pages, help centers and privacy documentation, all checked on the date of publication. To judge quality without relying on our own impressions, we used LMArena, a public leaderboard built from blind, head-to-head votes, and looked at its overall text, creative-writing and web-development rankings. We scored both with our published Research Score. We did not run hands-on tests for this comparison.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Gemini if you use Gmail, Google Docs and Drive, want to create images or video, or want something cheaper than $20 a month.
  • Pick Claude if you write or edit for a living, work with long documents, or code.
  • Stay free if you use AI a few times a week. Gemini’s free tier is the more feature-rich one; Claude’s free tier gives you a much larger context window.
  • Considering ChatGPT too? See our three-way comparison, ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini.

How we compared them

  • Writing: LMArena’s creative-writing ranking, plus context window size for long documents.
  • Coding: LMArena’s WebDev ranking and the coding tools each plan includes.
  • Research: deep research features and which plans include them.
  • Context windows: how much text each plan can take in at once.
  • Google ecosystem: integration with Gmail, Docs, Drive and Chrome.
  • Images and video: whether generation is included, and on which plans.
  • Price and privacy: plan prices, training defaults, human review and retention.

Head to head

Writing. Claude has the edge. Claude Opus 5.5 ranked first on LMArena’s creative-writing leaderboard at the time of research, with Gemini 4 Argon a close second. The bigger practical difference is context: Claude lists up to 1 million tokens on every plan, so you can work with long drafts even on Free.

Coding. Claude, clearly. On LMArena’s WebDev board, Claude models took first and third place at the time of research, while Gemini’s best model ranked 11th. Claude Pro includes Claude Code. Google’s answer is Antigravity, its agentic development platform (basic weekly limits on Free, higher on AI Pro), and the Jules coding agent on AI Pro and Ultra.

Research. Gemini is more generous here: Google lists Deep Research on the free tier, though its limits page notes it may be unavailable at times of high demand. Claude’s Research feature requires Pro.

Context windows. Claude wins on paper at every price point. Google’s limits page lists 32,000 tokens for Gemini’s free tier, 128,000 for AI Plus and 1 million for AI Pro. Claude lists “up to 1M” on all plans, depending on the model.

Google ecosystem. Gemini, by design. AI Plus adds Gemini in Gmail and Vids; AI Pro adds Docs, Chrome auto browse and 5 TB of storage. Claude offers connectors to other apps on all plans and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365 on Pro, but it can’t match Gemini’s built-in place in Google’s apps.

Images and video. Gemini. Image generation and editing are on every tier, video generation starts with AI Plus, and AI Pro includes a limited trial of the Veo 3.1 Lite video model. Claude’s pricing page lists neither.

Gemini

8.2/10

Google’s plans pair a top-ranked model with image and video generation, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, and 5 TB of storage on AI Pro, at the same price as Claude Pro.

Gemini wins for most people because Google packs more into the same $20. According to Google’s US plan page, Google AI Pro ($19.99 a month at the time of research) includes access to Gemini 4 Argon, Deep Research, a 1-million-token context window, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, Chrome auto browse, video generation with four times the standard limits, 1,000 Flow credits for Google’s creative studio, and 5 TB of cloud storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos. The plan also bundles YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium Standard. If you’d pay for extra Google storage anyway, the AI comes along almost as a bonus.

Google’s top model also holds up on independent rankings. On LMArena’s overall text leaderboard, where people vote blind between two anonymous answers, Gemini 4 Argon (High) ranked first at the time of research, slightly ahead of Claude Opus 5.5. It ranked second, just behind Claude, for creative writing.

Gemini is also the more flexible option on price. Its free tier includes image generation and editing and Deep Research, and Google AI Plus fills the gap between free and $20 at $4.99 a month. Claude has nothing in between.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Coding is Gemini’s relative weak spot. On LMArena’s WebDev leaderboard, Gemini 4 Argon ranked 11th at the time of research, well behind Claude Opus 5.5 in first place. Google does offer coding tools: its plan page lists basic weekly limits for the Google Antigravity development platform on the free tier, and higher limits for Antigravity and the Jules coding agent on AI Pro.

Privacy also needs attention. Google’s Gemini privacy hub says that when Keep Activity is on, your activity is used to improve Google’s services, including training generative AI models, and a subset of chats is reviewed by humans, including trained service providers. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years. You can turn Keep Activity off, but chats are still kept with your account for 72 hours.

Who it’s for

People who use Gmail, Google Docs and Drive, want image or video generation, or want a cheap step up from free.

Who should skip it

You care most about writing or coding quality, or you don't want any of your chats read by human reviewers.

Pros

  • Gemini 4 Argon ranked first on LMArena's overall text leaderboard at the time of research
  • Image generation and editing even on the free tier; video generation from AI Plus
  • AI Pro ($19.99/month) adds Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids plus 5 TB of storage
  • Google AI Plus at $4.99/month fills the gap between free and $20

Cons

  • Free tier has a 32K-token context window and uses the smaller Flash-Lite model
  • With Keep Activity on, some chats are reviewed by humans and kept up to three years
  • Ranked well behind Claude on LMArena's web-development leaderboard

Claude

7.5/10

Anthropic’s top model leads LMArena’s creative-writing and web-development rankings, every Claude plan advertises a context window of up to 1 million tokens, and Anthropic has committed to keeping Claude ad-free.

If most of what you do is writing, editing or coding, Claude is the better assistant. On LMArena at the time of research, Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 ranked first in the creative-writing category and first on the WebDev leaderboard, where it also had a clear lead over Gemini. Claude Sonnet 5.5 ranked third on WebDev. These rankings measure the models rather than the apps, and they shift often, but Claude’s lead in both categories was consistent.

Long documents are Claude’s other strength. Its pricing page lists a context window of “up to 1M” tokens on every plan, Free included, depending on the model. Google lists 1 million tokens only for AI Pro and above; Gemini’s free tier gets 32,000. If you want to paste in a long contract, a book draft or a large chunk of code without paying, Claude gives you far more room.

According to Anthropic’s pricing page, Pro adds Opus, Research, unlimited Projects, Claude Code for programming, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. The free plan already includes web search, memory, connectors to other apps, voice mode, Artifacts, and file creation with code execution.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Claude’s pricing page doesn’t list image or video generation, so if you want an assistant that makes pictures or clips, Gemini is the better fit. The free plan also skips the top Opus model, Research and Claude Code.

Usage is less predictable than a fixed message count. Anthropic says every plan’s limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans add weekly limits, and Pro gives “at least 5x” Free’s usage per session. And unlike Gemini, Claude doesn’t bundle storage or other services, so at $20 you’re paying for the AI alone.

Who it’s for

Writers, editors, analysts and developers who work with long documents or code.

Who should skip it

You want image or video generation, or you live in Gmail and Google Docs.

Pros

  • Claude Opus 5.5 ranked first on LMArena for creative writing and web development
  • Context window of up to 1M tokens on all plans, including Free, depending on the model
  • Pro includes Claude Code, Research, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365
  • Anthropic says Claude will remain ad-free

Cons

  • No image or video generation listed on Claude's pricing page
  • Free tier lacks Opus, Research and Claude Code
  • No plan between Free and $20 a month

Price compared

At the time of research, the main plans cost almost the same: Claude Pro is $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front), and Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month in the US.

The differences are above and below that price:

  • Cheaper option: Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month and adds the Flash model, double the free usage limits, video generation and 400 GB of storage. Claude has no plan between Free and Pro.
  • Power-user plans: Claude Max starts at $100 a month for five or 20 times Pro’s usage and includes monthly API credits. Google AI Ultra costs $99.99 a month (five times AI Pro’s limits) or $199.99 (20 times), with storage starting at 20 TB.
  • Bundled extras: Only Google bundles non-AI services: 5 TB of storage, YouTube Premium Lite and Google Home Premium Standard with AI Pro.
  • How limits work: Both use rolling windows. Anthropic says Claude’s limits reset every five hours, with weekly limits on paid plans. Google says Gemini’s limit refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly limit; AI Plus doubles and AI Pro quadruples the standard limits.

If you’d pay for Google storage anyway, Gemini is the better value. If not, the $20 plans are a tie on price, and Claude’s annual discount makes it slightly cheaper.

Privacy compared

Both companies can use consumer chats to improve their models, and both let you limit that. The details differ:

  • Claude: Anthropic’s pricing page lists model training as “opt-out” on Free, Pro and Max. If model improvement is on, Anthropic says it may keep your data in de-identified form for up to five years; if it’s off, your chats aren’t used for future training. Deleted chats leave Anthropic’s back-end storage within 30 days, and Incognito chats are never used to improve Claude. Anthropic has also said that “Claude will remain ad-free.”
  • Gemini: With Keep Activity on, Google uses your activity to improve its services, including training generative AI models, and some chats are read by human reviewers and kept for up to three years. Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default (you can choose 3 or 36 months, or turn auto-delete off). With Keep Activity off, or in temporary chats, Google still keeps chats with your account for 72 hours.

Claude has the edge on privacy, mainly because of Gemini’s human review of some chats, the three-year retention of reviewed chats, and Anthropic’s public no-ads commitment. Whichever you choose, turn off training if you don’t want it, and use the temporary or incognito modes for anything sensitive.

The bottom line

Choose Gemini if you want the most for your money: it matches Claude’s price, tops LMArena’s overall text ranking, generates images and video, plugs into Gmail and Docs, and comes with 5 TB of storage on AI Pro, plus a $4.99 plan if $20 is too much. Choose Claude if you write, edit or code for a living: its top model leads the creative-writing and web-development rankings, it gives you a 1-million-token context window even for free, and its privacy terms are easier to live with.

Not sure? Both have free tiers. Try each for a week on your real work, then pay for the one you keep opening. For more options, see The Best AI Chatbot and our Claude Pro review.
